Oceans and the blue economy

We support sustainable ocean governance and innovation in the blue economy. Our work ranges from forecasting the health of seas and coasts to blue circular economy models, with an emphasis on marine biodiversity and resource efficiency.

Support for the mission “Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and continental waters”

This forward-looking project supported the Mission Board for Ocean Health by analyzing emerging issues and possible futures. The scenarios explored focused on sustainable governance of marine resources and innovation in the blue economy. The results were incorporated into the design of the EU Mission on Oceans.

OCEANS coordination and support action

This project brought together research communities and policymakers around the JPI Oceans. We developed forward-looking practices and forward-looking agendas to improve dialogue between science and EU institutions. The initiative laid the groundwork for more integrated marine foresight and policy coordination.

Initiative on water scarcity in southern Europe

This cross-cutting KIC initiative supported innovative solutions to water scarcity in Mediterranean regions. Engagement activities included mentoring, start-up support, and stakeholder dialogues. The project fostered collaboration between innovators, policymakers, and communities.

Evaluation of blue economy start-ups

- DigiCirc Blue Economy Accelerator
This program supported start-ups and SMEs developing circular solutions for the blue economy. We contributed through evaluation panels for young innovators. The results strengthened Europe's capacity to lead sustainable blue innovation.

Circular economy

We help design and implement circular strategies that preserve value, close resource cycles, and foster innovation. Our activities cover eco-innovation, circular cities, industrial symbiosis, and pathways to systemic transition.

Case studies on eco-innovation and the circular economy

This research analyzed public funding initiatives that foster eco-innovation ecosystems. The results provided practical lessons for policymakers and practitioners on how to support transitions to the circular economy. The cases demonstrate how targeted funding accelerates systemic change.

Towards a smart circular economy: the role of digitalization

- Digital Spain Foundation
The study analyzed how digital technologies enable the transition to a circular economy in Spain. It combined documentary research with stakeholder dialogues to highlight opportunities in sectors such as manufacturing and retail. The findings emphasized the importance of data-driven circular business models.

Eco-innovation: when sustainability and competitiveness go hand in hand

This international study analyzed how eco-innovation generates both environmental and economic benefits. It provided evidence for policymakers and businesses on circular practices. The results of the communication included books, press articles, and policy briefs.

Climate-positive economics

We contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation by aligning foresight, innovation, and policy support. Our projects focus on the transition to a low-carbon industry, renewable energy, sustainable finance, and just transition approaches.

CARISMA – Advisory project on innovation in climate mitigation

This project developed knowledge support for climate change mitigation policy and innovation. It connected researchers, policymakers, and industry actors to assess mitigation pathways. Outcomes included policy briefs and recommendations for scaling up climate-positive innovations.

Low-Carbon Enterprise – Low-Carbon Business Perspectives

This forward-looking project analyzed ways for companies to reduce their emissions in Spain. The scenarios explored low-carbon energy transitions and their economic implications. The results supported corporate strategy and debates on national energy policy.

Scenarios for post-Kyoto mitigation regimes

This project assessed opportunities and barriers for climate change mitigation in the post-Kyoto framework. The scenarios highlighted pathways for decarbonization of energy and industry. The results supported debates on European climate policy.
